Praying The Trinity

If you are leading the worship in a meeting it is important to think carefully about your prayers. You are in a position to guide the way a congregation relates to God by your words, and praying the Trinity will help them to relate to the Trinity. Your prayers can also frame songs in such a way that the content of the song is given a certain interpretation. For instance, suppose that you sing a ‘God song’ that does not identify the person to whom it is sung. You could pray before singing it, using the words of the song and directing them to a particular person of the God-head or to all three.
This prayer then changes the way that many in the congregation will use the song. It is a truism that the person leading worship needs to be someone who models genuine worship - you usually cannot lead the people where you have not gone yourself. In just the same way, worship leaders need to pray the Trinity as a role model for the congregation. You can even invite worshippers to offer prayer to the Father, then to the Son and then to the Spirit. This semi-guided prayer focuses the minds of the congregation on the Trinity without requiring from them a high level of theological sophistication before they can contribute publicly.
