Thousands attend HTB Leadership Conference

The 2012 HTB Leadership Conference took place on the 14th and 15th May at the Royal Albert Hall. Nicky Gumbel’s theme for the conference was putting the Great Commandment of God’s love on display. Over 4000 delegates representing 900 churches and organisations came together to consider that call. Main speakers included Rick Warren, Christine Caine, the Bishop of London, Judah Smith, and former Prime Minister Tony Blair. Worship was led by Tim Hughes, Ben Cantelon, and Nikki Fletcher, with guest appearances from Matt Redman, Martin Smith, andMatt Maher.
In one powerful moment, Pastor Smith – a Pentecostal preacher – shared the main stage with an Italian Catholic Abbot. This was a wonderful example of Gumbel’s call to inter-denominational unity. Further break-out sessions focused upon wider aspects of leadership in the church, local communities, business, and culture. These conversations with key leaders ranged from the challenging (‘Responding to the Riots’) to the inspirational (‘Releasing Creativity’). My personal highlight were the sessions with Pastor Warren. His call to purposeful living and sincere leadership was a welcome reminder that effective leadership does not emerge through desire or hard work alone, but rather as God graciously works his love for the world through his church.
