One in five UK adults observe Lent

A recent study has shown that 23% of adults in the UK will ‘do something’ for Lent. However, of those who said they would take part, 32% did not know what they would do to mark the season.
Of the 2,024 men and women over 18 surveyed, the most enthusiastic group were aged between 18-24 years old. The study also showed that more women than men planned to recognise Lent.
The season of Lent is traditionally observed with a period of prayer, reflection and fasting. With many people choosing to spend the 40 days denying themselves of items such as chocolate and alcohol.
The recent study found less people this year were planning of fasting (17% giving up chocolate and 8% giving up alcohol), than the 21% of people who were opting to do more ‘positive and kindly’ acts over the season.
