A New Kind of Pilgrimage

The year 2012 was an incredible, golden one. The Olympics, Paralympics and The Queen's Golden Jubilee were all experiences that will live long in the memory and be greatly cherished. My family and I had the privilege of going to several events during the Paralympics, including a night in the stunning Olympic stadium. However, that year was quite an adventure for me personally in another respect:
Inspired by Maggi Dawn’s book The Accidental Pilgrim and Tearfund’s Transform Programme celebrating 40 years, I set out to take part in nine themed journeys each lasting for 40 days. Amongst the themes were simplicity, generosity, humility and celebration.
Intentionality and grace
In preparation for these ‘journeys’, and in all honesty throughout them, I wrestled with my motivations and the tensions of seeking to live this way intentionally in the light of the grace and forgiveness of God. I came to the conclusion that it is a good thing to live with intentionality. However it is vital that this is done in an attitude and spirit of grace (Psalm 139, Romans 3:10-26). We act because we are transformed and empowered by God’s spirit, not out of striving or straining as this surely only leads to an unhelpful form of legalism (Romans 12:1-2, James 1:22-25).
I was also motivated to take these journeys as I was keen to continue in my journey as a disciple. I enjoy learning, reading, exploring and wrestling with issues but also believe that practical outworking has to be the fruit of this exploration; I saw these journeys in the light of that.
Learning to walk humbly
The really helpful aspect of these journeys was outworking them in the context of community and relationship. During the simplicity journey my family and I took part in the ‘Live Below The Line’ challenge where we cut our weekly food bill by two thirds in order to live simply. It was a challenging but rewarding experience and sparked off lots of great conversations and learning, whilst enabling us to be generous through giving the underspend to Tearfund.
Generosity and celebration for me sit well with simplicity and humility. If we are to be whole life disciples in today’s world then we need to be generous but also prepared to live simply. To be able to celebrate the good and live in a way that enables us to walk humbly with our God (Micah 6:8).
Let's journey together
I would really encourage people to be intentional and explore some of these themes but to do so in the context of community. There are some great ways to help us do this. Tearfund’s Rhythms and also The Breathe Network are two helpful ways to enable action and reflection. I would also highly recommend reading Richard Foster’s book The Celebration of Discipline but encourage us to read and act upon this in small groups as well as individuals.
Life in all its fullness
Jesus came that we might have life in all its fullness (John 10:10). These journeys were a very fulfilling experience and I would encourage us all to explore how we might be able to bring more adventure and challenge into our everyday walk with God.
